Annoyed by: Fake Louis Vuitton
I think I'm starting a category of things that just generally annoy me. There are so many of them. So step back a moment and allow me to slip into a mood of disdain and snobbery. It's a part of my personality I usually try to conceal, but occasionally I just got to let it shine through, a sort of mental release.
Today's pet peeve is the ubiquitous Louis Vuitton bag. I admit that at one point I had LV envy. And even to this day I covet a nice Louis Vuitton suitcase set, just like the one my Barbie used when she and Ken took the campervan on a roadtrip.
But my envy fizzled once J-Lo starting pimping their gear. They've since dumped her but they haven't redeemed themselves in my eyes. The popularisation of Louis has made them so common that I just assume every one I see is a fake. So here are a few tips for LV luggage owners, or simply people who enjoy spotting the frauds.
You can always assume that the bag is a fake when the person is:
A) Dressed in sweats and shopping at Winners
B) Eating out at a McDonalds in Napanee (I really saw this once)
C) Wearing an outfit that indicates a total divorce from anything remotely fashionable (if your scuffed loafers look like you bought them in 1997 at Payless do you really expect me to believe you shelled out almost a grand for a bag?)
Even worse than the fake bag is the pseudo-Louis. This bag from afar looks like a real LV bag, but up close the monogram is actually some other initials, or maybe it's a 'fun design' or something. It's not like LV bags are so incredibly funky or fun. It's a status thing. With the pseudo-Louis you have a badly made bag with zero status and even the most uninitiated know it's not the real thing.
So that's my rant folks.
Maybe some day I'll actually be able to afford a set of LV luggage. But when that happens, I don't want a bunch of hooligans cheapening my ensemble with their whorish fakes. It'll be like whenever I wear my leather pants and some out-to-lunch civil servant inevitably asks "Are those pleather or leather?" As though I would be caught dead in synthetic dead animal. Only real dead skin for me folks. But that's a rant for another day.
P.S. For those compelled to write me hate mail/comments, please check this out before you spew.

Dude, your link to J-lo getting dumped goes to an Earth houses website. I am so upset by this misleading link to J-Lo dirt that I may go out and buy a huge fake LV luggage set and then invite you on the trip to cuba that I am going to win from Air Canada (thanks for that piece of spam, Hil!). Oh, I am a jerk today! As Denis Leary would sing (you know the song!) "A-S-S-H-O-L-E!" Government workers unite! Push down the walls of your cubicles and go home! Ahhhhh, just another Friday morning in the nation's capital.

i only carry real lv's---I have 3 of them and 2 different wallets. All purchased at LV stores in the US. I agree there are many fakes out there, and I wonder how teenage girls at the mall think they are really pulling off that their LV is real. However, your comment on sweats and eating at McDonalds is totally wrong. I have 2 kids and McDonalds is a favorite...and I walk in there in sweats with my LV.

Wow, aren't you a snob. I own 6 LV bags. And yes, they are real. 3 were purchased in Waikiki from and 3 in California. I wear sweaters and shop at Target with my LV. I work hard to make sure my daughter has everything I never had. I don't rarely treat myself and the one luxury I have is my LV purses. Just because I don't walk around looking like Paris Hilton with her designer outfits and money doesn't mean I don't have the right to own one.
Posted by: MaryJane | January 2, 2005 03:43 PM
I never said you didn't have the right to own one. But while you're bopping around Target in your sweats with your LV you should know 1) everyone in there is going to assume it's a fake, and 2) you're undermining your own status symbol by not treating it with the dignity it deserves. I'd certainly never promote dressing like Paris Hilton, but at least no one doubts the veracity of her luxury goods. Besides, 6 bags lady? Why not branch out into a little brand I like to call Originality!

How do I know if I've been sold a fake/phony LV????
Posted by: Shan | January 13, 2005 07:56 PM
Damn..who died and made you Paris Hilton?
Youre bitching about BAGS???? Are you fuckin kidding me?? For fucks sake..GET A LIFE!!!! ITS A FUCKING BAG!!!! WHO CARES!!!
God I love the snotty attitude some people have just because they have an LV BAG!!!

Um... I don't own a Louis Vuitton bag... that's the whole point of this post! And people, a few suggested guidelines when you're posting insulting things in my blog: 1. Read the post. 2. Consider developing a sense of humour.

When you own a peice LV, Gucci, YSL or anyother ultra expensive peice of gear you should portray the lifestyle that that cater too...really if you shop at winners, zellers or clean your own floors you should really not even own this stuff.

Hi, I know that you may think if you see someone eating at a McDonalds or shopping at a not so up scale places, but I've got one thing to tell you. I bought my Louis Vuitton Speedy 25 for $540.00 off eluxury.com, okay so I eat at Mcdonalds all the time I live in a town of around 2,000 people and the closet mall with up scale stores it over an hour and some away. So yeah you should never generalize plus I didn't spend 1,000 on anything. I take pride in my aperance and the things I own. But it doesn't mean I can't slip into a sweats outfit when i'm feeling pretty crappy that day and still not carry my Louie around, it makes me feel good.

If you wash your own floors you shouldn't own a Louis Vuitton bag??? That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. I am not going to sit here and call you a snob, that would be a lie. However, I do not doubt the fact that you probably wish you were able to be labelled as such. LV bags are by far not the priciest bags in the world and I bet if you did buy one, you would hire a maid for the day JUST to prove a point (and make yourself feel *special* like you so desperately need.) I'm really not trying to be mean or offend anyone...but if you must rant about something, next time pick something of actual IMPORTANCE.

i actually agree with Hilary....to see the little girls running around with fake bags is so incredibly irritating. i have a pair of louis vuitton sandals and they are so cute and original, not like the bags that everyone has around here. Hilary is correct in thinking though, that you should wait until you can purchase a real one instead of buying knockoffs and making the real brand look trashy.
Posted by: Lauren | June 14, 2005 09:52 AM
I think this is funny. Honestly, I bought my first LV bag because I liked it(I know you would too, ms sarcasm). I don't get people who are brand shoppers just for the name alone. If you want something get it, who cares about the genre that goes with it. Some of the fakes are actually good, I commend people who try. Do what you do, and as long as you aren't bothering me and your happy, I am happy for you.

Yea...its getting a bit annoying to see all of these fake-tanned, blonde people that are carrying the fake louis vuitton crap. Why don't they get a job and buy a real one? And everyone can tell that they are fake because there is only a total of about 6 different colours on them..meanwhile the real one has 33. Actually, to be honest, it's so EASY to tell when someone is carrying a fake...because 13 year olds can NOT afford to carry a $1,690 bag around town. I mean I could see if you are a working woman with a good job and all...but...anyways. I personally wouldn't carry a fake, because then it would make me look like a loser. I don't even own a louis vuitton bag..Im going to ask for one for Christmas though! Anyways Hilary, you have a good day!

I just purchased a Louis Vuitton bag off Ebay (and I know that there are bags being described as 'authentic' that are actually fakes listed on Ebay all the time.) But the bag was promised to be authenic. I did as much research on it as i could and when it all came down to it I didnt find out if it was truley authentic or not and I just went ahead and bought it anyways because after 5 solid hours on a computer i really didnt care anymore. If someone knows of someone that can do an analysis on a bag from some pictures I have of it, would they please let me know. While getting back on the topic of the louis vuitton battle were having here, Id like to add that i dont agree with ppl who go out and buy a fake louis vuitton bag and try to pretend its real (thats irritating) Seriously, there are so many fakes being carried around because designer is a status symbol, and ppl who carry louis vuitton bags get noticed. Some of thoes ppl just dont know that they only reason there being noticed is because there bag is obvisoulsy a fake...now there are some fakes that do pull it off very well and i wouldnt be able to tell a difference if i tried...but face it..were not all rich and famous, we all cant afford to own a louis vuitton bag and live the rich life although we dream about it every day. I bet there are some women who pinch pennies for years to get an authentic louis, its not fair to say that you cant have one unless you have money to flaunt. Although i do feel that Louis Vuitton as a compay is being violated by all these fakes floating around, but thats another issue isnt it??

I agree with who ever posted it first if you look around at any high school about 60 percent of the girls have a louis vuitton handbag. Why does everyone want to have the same bag that every one else has. I understnad if you want a designer bag- fake or real. But be creative geta bag noone else has and if you want a louis get a color or style noone else has. Be Creative nad get something fun and original.. noone will know its fake if noone has it!!!!
Hope you take my advice
Love yah All!

i just came across this site, and first, you people are really stupid to even argue about hand bags... there are wars, terrorist attacks going on around the world, people are dieing, you are so selfish and uneducated about everything that you're arguing about hand bags... who gives a flying fuck if people have fake hand bags, obviously your life sucks, and you have nothing better to do than this!!!
p.s. i know plenty of ppl that pimp out the LV, chanel, burberry, dolce, gucci at a very young age, some as young as 8, but hey, their rents can afford it... so... why not...
Posted by: princess | July 14, 2005 03:08 PM
I have read all the above feedback and I feel extremely stupid for being taken on ebay and believing I could buy a $740 dollar bag for a little over $100. I think I bought a fake Coussin GM. I have not received the bag via mail yet but I have a feeling after proving the bag is fake it will just sit in the closet. I guess I will focus my attention away from LV and start paying attention to things that truely matter. I am one of those who wonder how some people could afford a LV, I know now that they are fake. They say 80% are, that is really sad. If you want one buy it from eluxury and spend the dough for the real thing.

Okay i beleive it was X who said that a thirteen year old could not afford a louis Vuitton Bag WELL i am Twelve and i am a WELL PAID ACTOR AND MODEL and i bought a LOUIS VUITTON ABBYESS FOR 1500$ it took me a while to save up but some Teenagers CAN afford them and that is very predijust of you to say that
Posted by: Louis Lover | July 17, 2005 02:24 PM
ok..Hilary hunny...you need a fucking life..dont be mad cause u dont have a LV purse, and everybody else does..ur just mad cause u cant afford the real one and you defiantley cant afford a fake. so shut up. Cya!:)

Hey.
I think you've been completely misunderstood with this Vuitton arguement. I have to say that when I stumbled upon your site, I was very surprised because I've been experiencing a bit of Vuitton rage myself lately. A friend recently came home on vacation with the fakest looking Vuitton I've seen yet. When I see these bags, I can't help but ask "is it real?" You see, that's the fun part for me. Wait and see what they say and they always say yes... the thing is, being expensive aside, Vuitton only makes so many of each purse a year. It takes this long because they are hand stitched. If your bag is real, it WILL be calfskin, it WILL have gold-plated hardware and it WILL come with a card that has a serial number on it. You can then contact Vuitton yourself to comfirm that the purse it real. They'll be able to tell you which store it was purchased from, when it was made and even who made it. This is what you're paying for. And about the bags being status symbols - that's exactly what they are. I feel as though the entire brand has been cheapened by the cheap Chinese knock-offs that have been popping up every which way. That, and, just because you have one, doesn't mean you should take it anywhere. Like any fashion accessory, it has it's place. You wouldn't dine at Burger King and carry a beaded and feathered black bag just because you believe it to be Chanel would you? Now that's just plain ridiculous. Oh, and p.s. for those of you who will inevitably offer me the line that I'm "just jealous because I don't own one," well, now that's simply not the case. Personally, I'm holding out for a Birkin bag so those trips to Wendy's will be all the more enjoyable for me. Ahhh, the life of luxury.

I was raised around the real LV's carried the real LV's in middle school and high school along with lots of other firends of mine. My family are millionaires and guess what I still shop at Target, Walmart and all the others... Not because I can not afford better but because I am down to earth. You should get there!! O yeah...in case you actually believe that high schoolers and middle schoolers are only carrying fakes, look a little harder. Some of them have more money than you, and if they do not, their parents sure do. I am now almost 30, can tell when people are carrying fakes, but, not by what the person looks like or where they are shoppin, but by the look of the bag. Get over yourself, and whoever it was that said everyone is assuming that the LV is a fake if you are in Target or McDonalds, try not worrying about what others think, and a tip of advise, im sure they are more down to earth than you are, they dont care about your LV! And to those of you who said that if your carrying a LV you should only go to high scale places, how could you possibly disrespect Louis Vuitton by giving it initials, of all people you should know better... (Come on people it's a purse)

ok well why are so mad about ppl and their fake Louis Vuittons? just because you can't afford even a fake one. Also I'm in High School and I have a real Louis Vuitton and I still go to Target and McDonalds in a Juicy Sweatsuit! Who cares it's because I'm not stuck up! Most of my froends even have real Louis Vuitton's!! A couple of us got them together in Houston and Dallas! Ya we had to save up money but still they are real!!
and Hillary get over yourself! just beacause you don't have a real or even a fake Louis Vuitton! and ya I totally agree with "K"!! But ya it is annoying when you see little 12 and 13 yr olds at the mall carrying around fake Louis Vuitton's because they think they are soooo cool because they have a "Louis Vuitton" and it's also annoying when you see people carrying around fake Louis Vuittons but they are like by a different brand! but ya i just wanted to say all that and leave it at that!!

Well first of all anybody can buy a louis vuitton purse if they save up their money. Even milionaires go to mcdonalds and target and stuff (with their nice expensive purses)! Second of all their are so many companies out their that say they are selling real ones when their not so tons of people might think their bags are real when they really aren't. Who cares if kids are carrying around fake louis vuitton purses. When were that age we would probably do the same thing. It's not that big of a deal. Their just purses and don't see why anybody would care soooo much!
Posted by: me | July 25, 2005 03:04 PM
I don't think people are really understanding this post. (Apparently millionaire-education ain't what it used to be.) Where is all this traffic coming from anyway? Have I been linked from somewhere? As for people saying I can't afford an LV, or even a fake - well of course I can. Anyone can, what with credit limits in this country.
Posted by: hilary | July 25, 2005 07:07 PM
Fake LV's look stupid.
It's the same as Burberry. Doesn't matter what you team a louis with outfit wise, because you can tell if the bag is fake or not by the colours. Also if any of the LV's are cut off it's fake. Coz real Louis' do not cut off any of the LV's.
By carrying fakes we are making designers seem cheap at tacky.
Don't even bother.
Posted by: gem | July 26, 2005 03:50 PM
you say "if any of the LV's are cut off it's fake. Coz real Louis' do not cut off any of the LV's." but that's not true. maybe you should own a few REAL LVs before you make that kind of false statement.
Posted by: ck | August 3, 2005 08:49 AM
Your just jealous of people that have LV bags. If you had one you wouln't care about this stupid website and try to bash people that have LV bags. I go to McDonalds and I love wearing sweats, that definatley doesn't mean that my bags are not real
Posted by: Steph | August 8, 2005 06:02 PM
hey.
ok so you think that just because someone wears sweats and shops at winners then their louis vuitton is a fake? that is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. i own an authentic louis vuitton purse, and almost anyday i would pick sweats over jeans, and ya i do shop at winners. what does what someone is wearing have to do with if their bag is fake or not? how do you know they didn't just save up and splurge. that is pretty superficial. so get over yourself adn stop complaining about stupid things. grow up.

Hi, this is crazy all this stuff over a name brand!!! I don't have an opinion either way about who should carry a LV and who shouldn't. I just have a question... I bought a LV cherry speedy 25 off E-bay, I have done alot of research on LV since I got it, to find out if in fact it is real like I was lead to believe by the auction I got it from. I need to know the best way to tell if it is real or fake, for the bag I have the cherry speedy 25. So if anyone could help me out here so that I am not one of those people everyone is laughing at because I have a fake LV and I think it is real.
Posted by: Cecilia | August 16, 2005 03:53 PM
a) if your family has money then, why is it unbelievable that their teens couldn't own a louis (they aren't even expensive compared to hermes, goyard, or cartier)
b) Louis Vuitton is a luxury brand of function, they serve a purpose, can be refurbished, and are made to last years. If it were SOOOOOOO elitist then why are the stores so ubiquitous?
c) my parents have a maid, the lux cars, the country club membership, etc... and we do shop at targets and eat fast food on occassion, i wear sweats (albeit cute juicy ones) so who cares, doing these things doesn't shame my social status.... that is rediculous
d) knock-offs... who cares, if it bothers you that much then only buy vuitton lines from the exotic leathers, suhali leather or damier sauvage collections, which cannot be convincingly copied, and get on with life (if it is that traumatic for you then boycott the brand and donate that cash saved to a charity)
