Da Mix

Not being much of a radio listener, I find that I get most of my music through word of mouth... and a lot of that word is actually from other weblogs. (That and the OC, but you'll never get me to admit that.) So I decided that, periodically, I will share with you some of the mixes I make in an effort to give back to the blogosphere what it has given to me (namely Ryan Adams, Interpol, Mason Jennings and the Magnetic Fields. And I also recently discovered Feist and My Morning Jacket via Ryan's great road trip mix here.)

Now this package is a little list I like to call "Workout III." It doesn't have the edginess of Workout I, which featured the Killers nor the cheesy feel of Workout II (nothing like a little G'n'R) but with a rather bizarre mixture of 80s, 90s AND the hits of today, I consider it a good mix nonetheless.

And so I present to you:

Everything's Gonna Be Alright - Naughty by Nature
Naughty by Nature reminds me of the 8th grade when we all wondered what O.P.P. stood for. This songs has great tempo for the beginning of your run.

Gravel - Ani Difranco
I know what you're thinking - Ani is not workout music. But trust me, this angry song where she tells her cheating lover the ways that she abhors him and that he wasn't a good lay has great beats and keeps you pounding the pavement.

I Would Die 4 U - Prince
At this point you're getting those running endorphins and this surreal song takes you through the 'honeymoon' period of your workout.

Pumping on Your Stereo - Supergrass
Seriously, can you think of a better workout song?

Witness - Cyndi Lauper
A little retro tune you can sing along with will keep you going as the going gets tough!

L.A. Song - Fischerspooner
I actually cannot recollect how I felt during this song, but that was probably the point that I stopped running and pretended to be figuring out park maps while I caught my breath.

Luno - Bloc Party
I dig the Bloc Party. This is my token band-of-the-moment to demonstrate my hipness.

Ms. Jackson - Outkast
I'm not sure why I like this song so much since it seems to be about a man apologising to his ex-wife's mother for how he treated his wife (her daughter) while simultaneously threatening a custody war. But I can't help turning it up!

Black Capricorn Day - Jamiroquai
I never got into Jamiroquai in my freshman year like all my pals were doing, but as Julian said: "Put it on! You'll be dancing!" I'm serious - he really said that. He was right.

Wave of Mutilation - The Pixies
I heart the Pixies. And am running out of witticisms about the songs.

You Better You Better You Bet - The Who
I love jogging through the gates when this tune is on. The song is only half over by the time I get in, so my cat gets to hear my out-of-tune Pete Townshend impression. She is impressed.

I'm going to see Bloc Party tomorrow! They were great at Coachella this year. Jamiroquai is touring their latest; Jay Kay usually does some mean soul covers live, so go see their show if you like to dance funky. Oh, and Feist was bomb-diggity Saturday night (way more gritty than on her album) - go see her live if you can. If you like Interpol, try *stellastarr, also now touring. And Arcade Fire is in Vancouver on Oct. 7th, Hil. Go see them; their live show is one of the best I've ever seen (twice now) - they were here Sunday. Yes, I'm broke from concert ticket spending. Broke, but happy.

Thanks for the props on the mix. I agree with Tony, go see Arcade Fire. Thom and I are going, just got tix and they're around $40. Not bad when you consider their live show is regularly considered a thing of art.

If you like that My Morning Jacket, I recommend checking out all of At Dawn. It's their best CD out right now (that's because Z doesn't come out until October 4, when things change.) Bermuda Highway and Phone Went West are some of my fave MMJ songs. I'm also recruiting folk for the MMJ show on November 7 at the Commodore - keep this in mind.

Good work on the Bloc Party and Jamiroquai too. The latter is really impervious to any sort of critique I find, because it's just straight up good dance/pop. They have a new album out, so far only in the UK, but you can d/l it - I believe it's called Dynamite.

D'oh - I would totally love to see Arcade Fire, but unfortunately Tony forgot that I will be going to see HIM in San Francisco on October 7th! I love their album. Thanks for the recommendations!
