Gloating, just a little

I've been mulling over an entry on the J.D. versus LLB designations, as UBC students recently voted in favour of a switch to the former in a referendum. But I am a little behind on my work and not prepared for such academic rigour, so instead I leave you with a picture of a hike we took a few days ago in the glorious winter snow. This picture shows yet another reason to love this province, winter is never more than an hour and a half away, at least, er, in the winter. It was a cloudy day, but the mountains were spectacular nonetheless.

So that was my Saturday. Oh, and Sunday I went for a walk on the beach. Jealous yet?

P.S. Surprisingly, this picture was taken with my new cell phone... the quality is actually quite impressive considering. Only the inside ones come out a bit blurry, because of the lack of flash.

"It's not a Tumah"

Apparently Lakehead University has banned wifi on campus because of the risk of cancer and tumours. If there's any truth to this little rumour, I may be seriously screwed. My school and home are wireless, and let's face it, surfing down any street in Vancouver, (not that I've really surfed on the street, but I've tried to log on in cafes and at other people's apartments!) you can find four or five wireless networks. What really grates me is that they're usually locked; at least if you're going to give me cancer, make it an open port! Via Slashdot.

Johari Window

Because everybody's doing it, I wonder if you will do me a little favour and comment on my Johari window. See, there's a test on personality traits and you can tell me (anonymously or not) how you view me...
From Wikipedia

The test consists of a list of terms, each of which is an adjective relating to a personality trait. (For example, the list might begin with "accepting", "adaptable", "bold", "brave", "calm", "cheerful", and "complex".) A subject will select a few of these terms which he feels describes himself best. Each of his peers will then select a few terms which that person feels describes the subject best.

The terms are then plotted in a square grid divided along two axes into four quadrants. One axis represents "known (or not known) to self", and the other represents "known (or not known) to others.

The Melancholy Mix

Ever have one of those days where you're just not feeling it? Something sad has happened, something inevitable, some little, inevitable tragedy. It's time for hot milk, long baths and a really good book. And of course, it's time for the melancholy mix. You gotta do what Amy S. and I used to do when we were heartbroken, that is - make a mixture of songs that seems to capture the sadness. The source of your woe might be different, by the the doctor is in and the prescription is the same:

1. Chills - My Morning Jacket
"Chills running down my spine... still no one can lose your mind, except yourself"

2. I Can't Seem to Make You Mine - The Clientele
"And I tried to so hard darlin', but the crowd pulled you away through the rhythm and the rain, and the ivy coiled around my hand."

3. Waltz #2 (Xo) - Elliot Smith
"I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow."

4. Wicked Little Town - Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack
"You think that Luck/ Has left you there /But maybe there's nothing /up in the sky but air"

5. Et si tu n'existais pas - Joe Dassin
"Et si tu n'existais pas, /Dis-moi comment j'existerais /Je pourrais faire semblant d'être moi / Mais je ne serais pas vrai."

6. I'm Nobody's Baby - Judy Garland
"Won't somebody hear my plea and take a chance with me."

7. How Can I Tell You - Cat Stevens
"I need to know you, need to feel my arms around you, need to feel my arms around you, like sea around the shore."

8. Falling Through the Cracks - Lori Carson
"I'm feeling kind of lost and I can't make it back. If I could laugh and let it roll of my back, but I am not like that."

9. Lucha de gigantes - Nacha Pop
"En un mundo descomunal, siento mi fragilidad"

10. Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
"This place is so quiet, sensing that storm."

11. I Don't Believe You - The Magnetic Fields
"So you quote love unquote me, well stranger things have come to be, but let's agree to disagree, cause I don't believe you."

12. I Want You - Rachael Yamagata
"I want you, and no one, no one else will do."

13. Pillows and Records - Highwater Rising
"This house still sounds and smells like you."

14. Hard Way to Fall - Ryan Adams
"How she flips from the back to the front, reading magazines, oh my god I miss those things"

15. The Promise - Tracy Chapman
"Remembering your touch, your kiss, your warm embrace, I'll find my way back to you."

16. Grand Canyon - Magnetic Fields
"If I was the Grand Canyon, I'd echo everything you say. But I'm just me, I'm only me, and you used to love me that way, so you know how to love me that way. If I was Paul Bunyan, I'd carry you so far away, but I'm just me, I'm only me, and you used to love me that way. So you know how to love me that way."
