Guilty Pleasures

But I have to admit, this song is actually kinda catchy... take a listen by clicking on that prior link, and then feel the frozen chill zap down your veins as you realise who the singer is.

P.S. Bwahhhhaaa - I just got Julian to admit that he kinda liked it before telling him who it was!!!

P.P.S. Catchy ≠ good quality. I'm not saying she can sing - just that I might occasionally warble along.

The Melancholy Mix

Ever have one of those days where you're just not feeling it? Something sad has happened, something inevitable, some little, inevitable tragedy. It's time for hot milk, long baths and a really good book. And of course, it's time for the melancholy mix. You gotta do what Amy S. and I used to do when we were heartbroken, that is - make a mixture of songs that seems to capture the sadness. The source of your woe might be different, by the the doctor is in and the prescription is the same:

1. Chills - My Morning Jacket
"Chills running down my spine... still no one can lose your mind, except yourself"

2. I Can't Seem to Make You Mine - The Clientele
"And I tried to so hard darlin', but the crowd pulled you away through the rhythm and the rain, and the ivy coiled around my hand."

3. Waltz #2 (Xo) - Elliot Smith
"I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow."

4. Wicked Little Town - Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack
"You think that Luck/ Has left you there /But maybe there's nothing /up in the sky but air"

5. Et si tu n'existais pas - Joe Dassin
"Et si tu n'existais pas, /Dis-moi comment j'existerais /Je pourrais faire semblant d'être moi / Mais je ne serais pas vrai."

6. I'm Nobody's Baby - Judy Garland
"Won't somebody hear my plea and take a chance with me."

7. How Can I Tell You - Cat Stevens
"I need to know you, need to feel my arms around you, need to feel my arms around you, like sea around the shore."

8. Falling Through the Cracks - Lori Carson
"I'm feeling kind of lost and I can't make it back. If I could laugh and let it roll of my back, but I am not like that."

9. Lucha de gigantes - Nacha Pop
"En un mundo descomunal, siento mi fragilidad"

10. Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
"This place is so quiet, sensing that storm."

11. I Don't Believe You - The Magnetic Fields
"So you quote love unquote me, well stranger things have come to be, but let's agree to disagree, cause I don't believe you."

12. I Want You - Rachael Yamagata
"I want you, and no one, no one else will do."

13. Pillows and Records - Highwater Rising
"This house still sounds and smells like you."

14. Hard Way to Fall - Ryan Adams
"How she flips from the back to the front, reading magazines, oh my god I miss those things"

15. The Promise - Tracy Chapman
"Remembering your touch, your kiss, your warm embrace, I'll find my way back to you."

16. Grand Canyon - Magnetic Fields
"If I was the Grand Canyon, I'd echo everything you say. But I'm just me, I'm only me, and you used to love me that way, so you know how to love me that way. If I was Paul Bunyan, I'd carry you so far away, but I'm just me, I'm only me, and you used to love me that way. So you know how to love me that way."

Was This Big in Germany?

After turning off the latest polls on tv, I turned on my computer to find this video, which really cheered me up; now it's not quite as entertaining as cats chasing a laser pointer, but if you've got fond memories of Knight Rider, then it's worth a peek. I can't even begin to answer the question as to why this video exists, but it sure brightened my day.

Da Mix

Not being much of a radio listener, I find that I get most of my music through word of mouth... and a lot of that word is actually from other weblogs. (That and the OC, but you'll never get me to admit that.) So I decided that, periodically, I will share with you some of the mixes I make in an effort to give back to the blogosphere what it has given to me (namely Ryan Adams, Interpol, Mason Jennings and the Magnetic Fields. And I also recently discovered Feist and My Morning Jacket via Ryan's great road trip mix here.)

Now this package is a little list I like to call "Workout III." It doesn't have the edginess of Workout I, which featured the Killers nor the cheesy feel of Workout II (nothing like a little G'n'R) but with a rather bizarre mixture of 80s, 90s AND the hits of today, I consider it a good mix nonetheless.

And so I present to you:

Everything's Gonna Be Alright - Naughty by Nature
Naughty by Nature reminds me of the 8th grade when we all wondered what O.P.P. stood for. This songs has great tempo for the beginning of your run.

Gravel - Ani Difranco
I know what you're thinking - Ani is not workout music. But trust me, this angry song where she tells her cheating lover the ways that she abhors him and that he wasn't a good lay has great beats and keeps you pounding the pavement.

I Would Die 4 U - Prince
At this point you're getting those running endorphins and this surreal song takes you through the 'honeymoon' period of your workout.

Pumping on Your Stereo - Supergrass
Seriously, can you think of a better workout song?

Witness - Cyndi Lauper
A little retro tune you can sing along with will keep you going as the going gets tough!

L.A. Song - Fischerspooner
I actually cannot recollect how I felt during this song, but that was probably the point that I stopped running and pretended to be figuring out park maps while I caught my breath.

Luno - Bloc Party
I dig the Bloc Party. This is my token band-of-the-moment to demonstrate my hipness.

Ms. Jackson - Outkast
I'm not sure why I like this song so much since it seems to be about a man apologising to his ex-wife's mother for how he treated his wife (her daughter) while simultaneously threatening a custody war. But I can't help turning it up!

Black Capricorn Day - Jamiroquai
I never got into Jamiroquai in my freshman year like all my pals were doing, but as Julian said: "Put it on! You'll be dancing!" I'm serious - he really said that. He was right.

Wave of Mutilation - The Pixies
I heart the Pixies. And am running out of witticisms about the songs.

You Better You Better You Bet - The Who
I love jogging through the gates when this tune is on. The song is only half over by the time I get in, so my cat gets to hear my out-of-tune Pete Townshend impression. She is impressed.
